When the Spanish first came to Northwest Florida in 1559, the area was only populated by Native American who thrived on marine life and game such as deer and buffalo. Later others such as the English and French settled in the area. In the nineteenth century American pioneers started large timber and shipbuilding industries.
Navarre was founded and platted in 1925 by Army Colonel Guy H. Wyman, a retired Army engineer. He grew up in DeFuniak Springs but fell in love with the isolated white sandy beaches in the south Santa Rosa county area. It was named after his wife's favorite province in northern Spain where they loved to vacation.
The Navarre Bridge to Santa Rosa Island was built in 1960 and started a flux of beach lovers to the island where there is abundance of natural white sandy beaches and emerald colored waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Navarre Beach continued to grow but still remained "one of Florida's best kept secrets". Today more and more people are recognizing it as the best tourist destination in Florida. Luxury condominiums, townhouses, quaint beach cottages and large single family home are abundant. However it remains a quiet, relaxing community that some folks call home and others are discovering "Florida's Best Kept Secret".
