About 18 miles west is Pensacola Naval Air Station. Pensacola NAS began in April 1826 as the Pensacola Navy Yard and became one of the best equipped naval stations in the country. In its early years, the base dealt mainly with the suppression of slave trade and piracy in the Gulf and Caribbean. Today it is known as the "Cradle of Naval Aviation," and serves as the launching point for the flight training of every Naval Aviator, Naval Flight Officer (NFO), and Enlisted Aircrewman. Pensacola NAS is also home to the Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron (NFDS), the world famous Blue Angels.
